Villars-sous-Yens .... has been a habitat for about 2000 years; its name .... was ancient Romane, i.e.
villa somewhat to the south of its present site, no exploratory work having been untertaken so far. None the
less, as early as 1827, the greatest Vaudois treasure was found with more than 300 Roman coins of the second
and third centuries of the Christian era. Tiles of that time were discovered in 1964 only. No witnesses have
been fund of the Burgundian epoch. The first written document mentioning Villars has come down to us since Pope
Alexander III who extended his protection over the Chapel of villars which depended on the near-by priory of
Etoy, itself being the property of' the Mont-Joux hospice i.e. the present Grand-St-Bernard, Alpine pass.
Having always been fascinated by personal origin and history. I was joined by Monsieur Félix BERTHET acting as
assistant author of the researches carried out for the benefit of our regional inhabitants.
