Although the DROZ name appears in the 15th century at Corcelles in the val de Ruz valley and at Les Verrières
the best known DROZ family is undeniably to be based at Le Locle, together with its members outnumbering the
others. As the legend has it, though without confirmation, Le Locle was founded by Jehan DROZ who had come
from Corcelles with his sons in 1303. Later on, i.e. in 1476, during the Burgundy wars, the mayor of Le Locle
was called Jehan DROZ. The name appears on documents in 1421 together with the one of Othenin, son of
Richard le DROZ.
The DROZ family with its numerous kins may be subdivided into several branches, the names of which were composed
with the one of DROZ. In this way Jaquet DROZ living in 1507 became the founder of the JAQUET-DROZ line whereas
another branch adopted the name of AMEZ-DROZsince it was the off-spring of a man called Amé Droz. A certain
Jehan DROZ probably married a girl called Busset whose descendants bore the name of DROZ dit (called) BUSSET.
Finally, his three sons Humbert DROZ mentioned in free shelter ??? in 1463 kept the Christian name of their
father and called themselves henceforth HUMBERT-DROZ.
